With this being our first true 3D game in our own engine it was helpful to sketch parts of the level from the ship's camera view.

The intro level

Our intro level had 3 parts: introduction of the basic controls, introduction of the vertical turn and lastly teaching the player to turn and move interchangeably.

Designing obstacles

The main thing in this game was avoiding obstacles and me and my co-LD spent a lot of time playtesting and adjusting obstacles so they were not impossible but gradually got more difficult.
